Tutorial 5:
Usenet Newsgroups and IRC

Case: Using Newsgroups and IRC in a Mayoral Campaign

Jack McLeod is running for public office. He wants to be mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Jack has been told that newsgroups could be a beneficial communication tool in his campaign, letting him tap into the current political climate among voters in his district, as well as nationally. However, he is unfamiliar how Usenet works and unsure how valuable this service would actually be. Jack currently uses Internet Relay Chat (IRC) to keep in touch with his daughter who attends a university in another city. These real-time conversations help minimize long distance phone bills and are a way to communicate easily and regularly. IRC could be another beneficial way for Jack to reach the voting population. Jack asked you to join his office as the technology public relations director. In this position, you will evaluate the effectiveness of using Usenet newsgroups as a campaign tool. In addition you will recommend the best method of using IRC to discuss important political topics with local citizens.
