The
chair of your college department was pleased with your presentation on college
social life and has referred you to the public relations department. The PR department
asks you to prepare a 20-minute presentation addressed to a group of high
school students on the advantages of attending your college. Your job is to
"sell" your college. You will use the Internet to gather information
about your college, such as admission requirements, housing arrangements,
financial aid, sporting events, or other areas of interest. Then create a
PowerPoint presentation that effectively communicates this information. You
will need a blank formatted disk labeled "PowerPoint Internet Assignments" on
which to save your work.
If you do not know the URL of your college, you can
use a search engine, such as Yahoo, to help you find it. Click the Yahoo
link to open the Yahoo home page, type
the name of your college in the Search text box, and then click the Search
button. You also may want to click the Education
link below the Search text box to limit the search to educational institutions,
type the name of your college in the Search text box, click the Search only in
Education option button, and then click the Search button. A list of matching
searches will appear (you may need to scroll down the page to see the matches).
Explore your college's information and look for advantages that make your
school a better choice in education over other schools. If you cannot locate a
Web site for your college with Yahoo, try using another search engine link
(such as AltaVista
or Go.com
) to find it. If you can't find the
Web site for your college, use another college of your choice.
Print any pages from your college's Web site that
lists admission requirements, housing arrangements, financial aid, sporting
events, or other areas that may interest your audience. Once you have gathered all
the information you need, close your Web browser.
Use the AutoContent Wizard to begin developing an
outline based on "Selling a Product or Service" from the Sales/Marketing type
of presentation. Create an on-screen presentation with the presentation title
"Attending…" (with the name or abbreviation of your school, college, or
university). Include a footer with your name, the date last updated, and the
slide number on each slide.
Apply the "Strategic" design template or a design
template of your choice to the presentation.
Go to Slide 1 and change the author's name to the
subtitle "The First Step to Your Best Future."
Alter the objectives on Slide 2 to reflect the points
you wish to make in your presentation or the objectives of your college.
Change the title of Slide 3 to an important area of
interest for your college. Then add appropriate text to the slide.
Change the title of Slide 4 to "Meeting Your
Needs at (name of your college)." Use the information you found on the
Internet and decide why your college would be a good choice for a freshman. You
may want to discuss housing arrangements, financial aid, sporting events,
quality of classes and professors, or other areas of interest. Make sure you
include why your college meets students' needs.
Go to Slide 5 and change the title and content to
reflect relevant financial aid information about your college.
Go to Slide 6 and list the strengths of your college.
Use your own knowledge or information you discovered on your college's Web
page.
Delete Slide 7.
On the new Slide 7, list ways to contact your college
for more information or to obtain an application for admission.
Spell check the presentation, and then use the Style
Checker.
Preview the presentation in Slide Show View.
Save the presentation as College Presentation to the
PowerPoint Internet Assignments disk.
Print your presentation as handouts with four slides
per page, and then close it.
