Microsoft PowerPoint 2002
Tutorial 6 Internet Assignment
Mars Odyssey Probe Mission
NASA is the space exploration agency of the United States. You are certainly familiar with the Space Shuttle, and probably with the International Space Station. NASA also designs, builds, and launches many deep space probes in order to learn more about other object s within our solar system, and even beyond our solar system. One of these projects is the 2001 Mars Odyssey probe, which is on a mission to explore the planet Mars from orbit around the planet. In this project you will use the Internet to learn about the Mars Odyssey mission, create a PowerPoint presentation with that information, and then create a single-page poster from the presentation
- Start PowerPoint and create a Blank presentation. Click the title placeholder and enter 2001 Mars Odyssey. Enter Exploring Other Worlds in the subtitle placeholder.
- Start your Web browser and log on to the Internet. Enter http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/odyssey/index.html
into your browser's address bar and press the Enter key to go to the Mars Odyssey site. (Note: If that URL is no longer valid when you execute this project, go to www.nasa.gov
and enter Mars Odyssey in the Search box on NASA's home page. Locate the Mars Odyssey home page from the search results.)
- Copy the URL of the 2001 Mars Odyssey home page. In PowerPoint, click the View menu, and then click Header and Footer. In the Header and Footer dialog box, deselect the Date and time check box if it has a check mark in it. Click the Slide Number box to insert a check mark to add the slide number to each slide. In the Footer text box enter Information obtained at and then past the URL for the Mars Odyssey Web site following the text. Click the Apply to All button. If the entire footer is not visible, switch to Slide Master view and adjust the size of the footer placeholder until the entire footer will display.
- The Mars Odyssey site has a link bar near the top of the page. Click the link titled Overview. Create a Title and Text PowerPoint slide and enter Mission Overview as the title for the slide. Select the first paragraph from the Overview page, copy it to the Clipboard, and paste it into the text placeholder on the PowerPoint slide. Convert the first paragraph to 3 to 5 bullet points.
- Insert another Title and Text slide, and enter Primary Mission as the title. Copy the second paragraph from the overview and paste it into the text placeholder and again format the text into bullet points.
- Create another Title and Text slide and enter Spacecraft Instrumentation as the title text. Copy the section of the Overview that details the instrumentation onboard the spacecraft and paste it into the text placeholder. Format it as bullet points.
- Create another Title and Text slide and enter Secondary Mission as the slide title. Copy the paragraph from the overview below the instrumentation bullet points and paste it into the text placeholder and format it as bullet points.
- Insert another Title and Text slide and enter Why Odyssey? as the title text. Copy the final paragraph from the overview that explains why the name Odyssey was chosen and paste it into the text placeholder. Format the paragraph as bullet points.
- Return to the top of the Mars Odyssey Overview page and click the link titled Mission. In the left hand margin, there are a series of topics listed. Click the topic titled Timeline and several more topics will be revealed. Click the topic titled Interplanetary Cruise. There is an illustration of the spacecraft titled Cruise Configuration - Normal on that page. Right-click on the image and save it to your solution folder. Create 3 or 4 bullet points from the information on the page and create a Title, Text and Content slide. Enter Cruise Configuration as the title, insert your bullet points, and insert the image you downloaded. (Note: A higher-resolution copy of this image can be found in the Gallery link section. If you prefer a better copy of the image, download it from the Gallery instead of the current Web page. This is true for the rest of the images found in the Timeline area as well.)
- Click the Mars Orbit Insertion link in the left hand margin. Find 3 to 5 key points about how the spacecraft will enter orbit around Mars and enter them onto a new Title, Text, and Content slide. Title the slide Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI). Find an image of the spacecraft in MOI configuration and save it to your student folder, and then insert it into the slide.
- Click the link titled Aerobraking in the left hand margin. Create another Title, Text, and Content slide and enter Adjust Orbit Via Aerobraking as the title. Select three to 5 key points from the Aerobraking page and enter them as bullet points. Right-click the image of the spacecraft in aerobraking configuration and save it to your student folder, then insert it into the slide.
- Click the Mapping Orbit link in the left margin, and create another Title, Text, and Content slide. Enter Mapping Orbit as the title of the slide. Insert 3 to 5 bullet points from the Mapping Orbit Web page, save the illustration of the orbiter in mapping configuration to your student folder, and insert it into the slide.
- Click the Communication Relay link in the left margin. Create another Title, Text and Content slide and enter Communicating With Earth as the title. Create 3 to 5 bullet points from the Web page and save the communication relay image to your student folder and then insert it into the slide.
- Click the link in the left margin titled Spacecraft. Insert a Text and Title slide and copy the first paragraph from the Web page to the text place holder, and format it as bullet points. Title the slide Mars Odyssey Statistics. Save the image of the spacecraft from the Web page to your student folder. Create a new Title and Content slide and insert the image into the slide. Title the slide The Mars Odyssey Spacecraft.
- Click the Slide Design button and scroll through the design themes. Find one titled Ricepaper.ppt and click it to apply it to the presentation. Scroll through the slides and make any adjustments that might be necessary as a result of applying the theme.
- Save the presentation as 2001 Mars Odyssey.ppt. You'll now create a single-page poster version of the presentation. Leave the presentation open and create a new blank presentation. Save the new presentation as Mars Odyssey Poster.ppt.
- Click the Draw button on the Drawing toolbar, and then click Grids and Guides. Insert a check mark in the Snap objects to grid box if there is not one already present. Specify the grid settings as 0.1 inches, and click the OK button. Click the File menu, and then click Page Setup. Select the Custom option from the list box, and change the Width to 6 inches and the Height to 4 inches. Click the OK button.
- Change the font size of the title placeholder to 10 points, and drag the title placeholder to the top of the slide. Adjust the height of the placeholder so it is no more than .5 inches in height, ,4 would be ideal. Click the subtitle placeholder and change it to 8 points. Drag it to the top of the slide as well and position it just under the title placeholder. Adjust its height as well, and make it about the same as the title slide.
- Enter 2001 Mars Odyssey as the title text. Enter Exploring Other Worlds as the subtitle text.
- Switch back to the 2001 Mars Odyssey presentation and switch to Slide Sorter view. Click on slide 2 to select it, and click the Copy button. Switch back to the Mars Odyssey Poster presentation, click the Edit menu, and click Paste Special. Click the Picture option and click the OK button. Click the picture to select it if necessary, and click the Format Picture button on the Picture toolbar. Make certain the Lock aspect ratio box has a check mark in it and then click the Size tab and change the Width to 1.25 inches. Click the Colors and Lines tab and add a Black line border around the slide, then click the OK button. Position the slide near the left edge of the title slide and below the subtitle line. You will be creating 3 rows of four slides each, so keep that in mind when positioning the slides.
- Repeat step 20 for each slide. Insert the next two slides below slide 1, the next three slides will be the second column, the next three slides the third column, and the final three slides the fourth column. Arrange them so they are spaced nicely across the page and down the page.
- Save the presentation, and close it. Close the other open presentation (save it if prompted to do so) and exit PowerPoint.
