Topic Area 4 Working with Type:
List and describe the advantages and disadvantages when using OpenType, TrueType, or Type 1 fonts.
Over the years, the computer graphics world has seen a number of different font technologies compete for dominance. Adobe used its proprietary PostScript technology to produce font libraries, and also developed Adobe Type 1 fonts. In March, 1991, Apple introduced TrueType font technology to compete with Adobe. Apple partnered with Microsoft to create TrueType fonts; TrueType fonts have been built into the Macintosh operating system ever since.
Then, Adobe partnered with Microsoft to produce OpenType font technology. OpenType, which is essentially a subset of TrueType and Adobe PostScript font technology, provides improved cross-platform portability, which means that the fonts can be used on both the Macintosh and PC platforms.
What does all this mean to you when using Adobe Illustrator CS? A couple of things. First, all Adobe products will work well with Adobe font products. Therefore, you can expect that Illustrator CS will work well with Type 1 fonts and OpenType fonts.
If you’re using TrueType fonts, don’t expect to find any support from Adobe Help or technical support; TrueType is not an Adobe product. Finally, you should know that you can use all three types of fonts in Illustrator CS, but you may run into font conflicts if you try open and load the same font from two or more different type systems.

Topic Area 6 Managing Color:
Discuss the color management workflow process that is used in Adobe Illustrator
Set up color management in Illustrator by using the Color Settings dialog box.
Color-matching problems result when graphics are created in various settings with various computer devices and output devices. When color is critical, one solution is to create a color management system that interprets and translates color accurately between devices.
Consistency is the goal here – consistency from the color space in which the color was created to the color space in which it is output. Color management functions as the translator between those color spaces. Illustrator offers color management controls in its Color Settings command and dialog box, located in the Edit menu. You can choose from a list of predefined color management settings for common workflow scenarios.
