Topic A0:   Classroom setup

All our courses assume that each student has a personal computer to use during the class. Our hands-on approach to learning requires they do. This topic gives information on how to set up the classroom to teach this course. It includes minimum requirements for the students’ personal computers, setup information for the first time you teach the class, and setup information for each time that you teach after the first time you set up the classroom.

Student computer requirements

Each student’s personal computer should have:

·    A keyboard and a mouse

·    A Pentium 233 or faster processor

·    128 MB of available RAM (more recommended)

·    1.6 GB of available hard-disk space

·    A CD-ROM drive

·    An XGA monitor set to 1024×768 resolution

·    A printer driver installed, for completing an activity in Unit 3

·    Internet access, if you want to download the Student Data files from www.courseilt.com/instructor_tools.html

First-time setup instructions

The first time you teach this course, you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.

1   Install Microsoft Windows XP on an NTFS partition according to the software manufacturer’s instructions. If the student computers have Internet access, and they are behind a hardware or software firewall, install the latest critical updates and service packs from www.windowsupdate.com. (You can also use Windows 2000, but the screen shots in this course were taken using Windows XP, so students’ screens might look somewhat different.)

2   Adjust the computer’s display properties as follows:

a   Open the Control Panel and click Appearance and Themes.

b   Choose Display to open the Display properties dialog box.

c   Verify that the Theme is set to Windows XP.

d   On the Settings tab, change the Screen resolution to 1024 by 768 pixels, and the Color quality setting to High (24 bit) or higher.

e   Click OK. If you are prompted to accept the new settings, click OK and click Yes. Then, if necessary, close the Display Properties dialog box.

3   If there is no printer attached to the computer, or the driver for it does not install automatically, install a printer driver manually. Any driver for a common printer can be used, as no actual printing will be done. Word Pro generates an error when starting if no system printer is identified.

4   Install Word Pro 9.8 (or Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition 9.8) according to the software manufacturer’s instructions. Accept all the default options. When the IBM/Lotus Product Registration window comes up, close it.

5   Create a folder called Student Data at the root of the hard drive.

6   Download the Student Data files for the course. You can download the data directly to student machines, to a central location on your own network, or to a disk.

a   Connect to www.courseilt.com/instructor_tools.html.

b   Click the link for Lotus Word Pro to display a page of course listings, and then click the link for Lotus Word Pro 9.8: Advanced.

c   Click the link for downloading the Student Data files, and follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

7   Copy the data files to the Student Data folder.

Setup instructions for every class

Every time you teach this course, you will need to perform the following steps to set up each student computer.

Important note: When Word Pro is first started, it opens the Word Pro Preferences dialog box, where students enter a user’s name and initials. As the program is used, some preferences are established and file menus become populated with previously used documents. These settings are not removed by a simple uninstall of the program. Use the procedure below to ensure that lessons will work as written.

1   Uninstall Lotus Word Pro or Lotus SmartSuite.

a   Uninstall Lotus Word Pro or SmartSuite by using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel.

b   Reboot the computer.

c   Delete the folder C:\lotus.

d   Select start, Run. Enter regedit and click OK.

e   Delete the key HKEY-CURRENT_USER>Software>Lotus>.

f    Reinstall Lotus Word Pro or SmartSuite.

2   Delete the contents of the Student Data folder. (If this is the first time you are teaching the course, create a folder named Student Data at the root of the hard drive.)

3   Copy the data files to the Student Data folder. (See the download instructions in the preceding section.)
